The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (also known as the "Clery Act") requires colleges to compile and publish campus security policies, as well as statistics on certain criminal offenses that occur on or adjacent to college properties. Berklee's Public Safety Department publishes this report annually to inform the campus community of Berklee's safety- and security-related policies, procedures, and programs. The statistics are gathered for buildings owned or controlled by Berklee, and are provided for this report by the Boston Police Department, Berklee's Division of Student Affairs, and other campus security authorities.

Each year, all active students, faculty, and staff receive an email with a link to the annual Security and Fire Safety Report.

Campus Security Authorities
The Clery Act requires colleges to compile and publish statistics on certain criminal offenses that occur on or adjacent to college properties. Although Berklee strongly encourages everyone to report any crime to the Public Safety Department, there may be instances where the reporting party only wants to report a serious crime to another college official. Clery defines these officials as a campus security authority, or CSA. Colleges are required to identify these specific employees who might receive these serious crime reports.
The purpose of this page is twofold:
What is a campus security authority (CSA)?
A CSA is a term used in the Clery Act to describe someone who has significant responsibility for student and campus activities. That person could be:
- a campus police department or a campus security department of an institution;
- any individual or individuals who have responsibility for campus security but who do not constitute a campus police department or a campus security department, such as an individual who is responsible for monitoring entrance into institutional property;
- any individual or organization specified in an institution's statement of campus security policy as an individual or organization to which students and employees should report criminal offenses; or
- an official of an institution who has significant responsibility for student and campus activities, including but not limited to student housing, student discipline, and campus judicial proceedings.
Note: Pastoral and professional counselors are not considered a campus security authority when acting in their roles as a pastoral or professional counselor.
What are a CSA's responsibilities?
As a CSA, you must immediately complete a Clery Crime Report Form for certain crimes reported to you. Under the Clery Act, a crime is considered reported as soon as it is brought to the attention of a CSA, and in some situations an immediate warning to the campus community might be necessary. More detailed information can be found on the reporting form.
Note: Although you are only obligated to complete a Clery CSA Crime Report Form for certain types of crimes, any crimes should be immediately reported to Berklee's Public Safety Department so appropriate action can be taken for the health and safety of our community.
What locations are reportable under Clery?
Clery requires statistics for crimes that occur:
- on campus;
- on public property within or immediately adjacent to the campus; and
- in or on non-campus buildings or property that your institution owns or controls.
If you are unsure what location category the reported crime falls under, simply provide all the details on the report form, and it will be reviewed.
What do I do if a crime occurs that is reportable under Clery?
If a crime is still in progress or continues to be a threat to the victim or others, please contact Berklee's Public Safety Department at 617-747-8888 immediately.
How soon does a Clery CSA report form need to be submitted?
It is important that you contact Berklee Public Safety immediately. Depending on the circumstances, and the possibility of a continued threat to the campus community, a timely warning BENS (Berklee Emergency Notification System) alert may be required.
