Student Employment – Resident Assistants
Looking to get more involved in Berklee's residence halls? Housing and Residential Education offers a variety of paid student employment opportunities as well as volunteer leadership roles. See the descriptions below to learn more.
Why Become an RA?
The resident assistants (RAs) are student staff members within Housing and Residential Education (HRE) who play a pivotal role in facilitating an inclusive, engaging, and supportive community, assisting students in connecting their experiences both within and beyond the classroom.
RAs do this through programming in the residence hall, providing peer-student support in times of crisis. RAs learn essential leadership skills, such as time management, communication, crisis response, problem-solving, and event-planning.
RAs are compensated for their work with a free, on-campus housing assignment, full meal plan, and priority registration.
The resident assistant (RA) is a student staff member of Housing and Residential Education. Housing and Residential Education believes that life in the residence halls provides students with an important opportunity to complement their classroom learning experience. The RA fulfills a vital role in the residence hall system by helping students integrate learning experiences gained from both inside and outside the classroom. The primary functions of the RA are to facilitate interpersonal relationships, to create living situations that maximize the opportunities for students to learn and grow, and to cultivate a safe and healthy living environment for the residential community.
The RA reports to the resident director (RD) or area coordinator (AC) and is expected to work closely with other staff members (other RAs) within the building, as well as across campus. Emphasis is placed on the concept that the RA is an active and integral staff member within the total campus community. The RA is in a position of responsibility and leadership that extends beyond the immediate scope of their own floor.
Resident Assistant – Position Requirements
- RAs are full-time undergraduate students and must be enrolled in a degree-granting program each semester, taking no less than 12 credits.
- RAs must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.7 and a semester GPA of 2.7 while employed.
- RAs must be in "Good Standing” with the Office of Community Standards and Conflict Resolution.
All candidates must meet the above requirements at the time of application to be eligible for the resident assistant role.
